ANTIQUE EBONY OCTANT, An early 19th Century (circa 1830s) 9 ½ radius vernier octant. The ebony T-frame with inlaid ivory plaque engraved W.C. Cox, Devonport. The inlaid ivory scale divided 5-0-105 degrees. Brass index arm with ivory vernier scale, clamp and fine tangent screw. Seven shades, two mirrors and two telescopes contained within a fitted keystone mahogany box. ( W.C. Cox is recorded making instruments Devonport between 1822 and 1857.) |
